We are looking for experienced candidates for a full-time Environmental Scientist and NEPA Specialist position to assist with Renewable Energy projects in the Southwest Region. The Environmental Scientist/NEPA Specialist will support growing our energy business, with specific emphasis on permitting renewable energy projects on federal, state, and private lands.

 

Successful candidates will have a strong technical background in planning, permitting, and evaluating environmental impacts of energy projects. Experience will include federal, state, and local permitting, including NEPA 1st and 3rd party work for solar, wind, energy storage and transmission line siting and routing.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and manage the performance of technical and environmental studies, assessments, surveys, and inspections for energy projects.
  • Support and manage environmental due diligence projects.
  • Willing to travel and conduct fieldwork in a range of environments from busy urban areas to remote locations.
  • Review and interpret local, state, provincial, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Candidates will work within a team to prepare conditional use, land use, right-of-way, and other local jurisdictional permitting efforts.
  • In addition to permitting, this role will include managing the preparation of resource studies (e.g., wildlife biology, wetlands, cultural resources) associated with energy project permitting, as well as the production of permit applications to state utility boards.
  • Represent clients before federal, state, and local regulatory and land management agencies, boards, planning commissions and councils.
  • Prepare project descriptions and summaries, respond to data requests, and make presentations to the governing jurisdiction’s representatives in public meetings in order to obtain approval for projects.
  • Our team member will have experience working with environmental, regulatory and land use agencies, such as: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and/or National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), state agencies, and local county and city planning departments.
  • Candidates must be able to handle multiple tasks, coordinate effectively with others, and work independently within a team.
  • Candidates must be able to research and interpret federal, state, and local regulations on a project-specific basis to assess project permitting feasibility and requirements, and interface with regulatory agencies.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to utilize critical thinking, a flexible approach to problem solving, excellent interpersonal communication (oral and written), planning, and organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Prepare reports and communicate results to clients.
  • Assist with managing projects and client relationships.
  • Assist with maintaining project timelines and budgets.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in an Engineering, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science or Mathematics/related major.
  • 3 to 10+ years of related consulting or planning experience.
  • Experience with the resources and regulatory agencies in Southwestern states.
  • Project/Task management experience.
  • Experience with renewable energy projects, preferably wind and/or solar in utility-scale environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Solid Microsoft (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Project) and other software tool skills.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in understanding and applying environmental regulations to real-world situations.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and at remote job sites.
  • Ability to manage work on several tasks at any given time.
  • Ability to work well with a team.
  • A valid driver's license and clean driving record is required for this position.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

 

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience.

$50,000 - $130,000 yr.
